MATERIALS
Recommended Yarn
A - Ritual Dyes Elder (Worsted weight; 100% Rambouillet wool; 173 m / 190 yds per 100 g / 3½ oz)
1 (1, 1*) skein in colour Chestnut (or colour of choice!)
*The full skein of Elder is needed for size 3, and may require you to unravel your gauge swatch. Sorry!
OR approx 145 (160, 170) m/ 160 (175, 185) yds of a similar worsted weight wool / wool blend yarn
B - Ritual Dyes Fae (Lace-weight; 72% Kid Mohair, 28% Silk; 419 m / 459 yds per 50 g / 1¾ oz)
1 (1, 1) skein in colour Chestnut (or colour of choice!)
OR approx 150 (165, 180) m / 165 (180, 200) yds of a similar lace weight mohair blend yarn
Yarns A and B are held together throughout the pattern
Alternatively, a single strand of an aran weight wool / wool blend yarn can be substituted in place of holding yarns A and B held together. Please swatch to ensure correct gauge can be achieved! You will need approx 160 (180, 200) m / 175 (200, 220) yds of an aran weight yarn.
Needles
3.75 mm (US 5) straight needles (or use circular needle if preferred) for long-tail tubular cast-on
3.75 mm (US 5), 40 cm / 16” circular needle for brim
4 mm (US 6), 40 cm / 16” circular needle for main pattern of toque
4 mm (US 6) DPNs (or long circular needle for working Magic Loop) for crown shaping
or needle size needed to obtain correct gauge
Notions
4 Stitch markers (one different for BOR), yarn needle
GAUGE
24 sts x 27 rows = 10 cm / 4” on 4 mm (US 6) needles in main pattern, blocked (1 repeat of the main pattern for size 1 should measure 10 cm / 4", when relaxed and not stretched).
Adjust needle size if needed to obtain correct gauge.
NOTES
The Cheslie Toque is worked in the round from the brim up to the crown. The main stitch pattern for the body of the hat is written out line by line as well as charted. Please choose which set of instructions you would like to follow. A strand of worsted weight wool is held together with a strand of lace weight mohair throughout the pattern, creating a thick and warm fabric with a slight halo. The fabric of this hat is meant to be quite dense, which is why a slightly smaller than normal needle size has been recommended.
As a potential pattern modification idea, the brim of the hat can be knit shorter (I recommend working the brim to 5 cm / 2") to omit the fold up style. The brim edge naturally wants to wave slightly due to the stitch pattern pulling the stitches up in certain places. This wave might be emphasized on a shorter brim, so please keep that in mind. Wet blocking will help to reduce this wave.
