Lewsky Hood:
The Drawcord Casing!
(video tutorial below!)
The Lewsky Hood was recently re-released as an individual pdf pattern from Moon + Turtle! I took this opportunity to make a small improvement to the drawcord casing. The finished hood resulting from the updated pattern is mostly the same as the original, however the updated version looks a little more tidy on the inside. If you purchased the book, and would like the updated instructions for drawcord casing, here it is!
Please note that this is not a complete pattern, and is only an exerpt. If you would like the entire pattern for the Lewsky Hood, it can be purchased here!
For the LEWSKY HOOD:
DRAWCORD CASING (edging around face opening)
The drawcord casing is worked in double-knit, and uses some other advanced techniques. Please see the video tutorial for the Pick up and Knit with Yarnover technique, as well as this tutorial for working Round 5 made specifically for this pattern!
Return the 16 sts on holder or waste yarn at base of face opening back onto 3.75mm circular needle and join yarn A.
Set-up round (RS): Ssk, YO, [k1, YO] 12 times to last 2 sts at bottom of face opening, k2tog, YO, PM, pick up and knit with YO 28 (30, 32) sts up right edge of face opening, place 18 sts at top of face opening onto LH needle, ssk, YO, [k1, YO] 14 times to last 2 sts at top of face opening, k2tog, YO, pick up and knit with YO 28 (30, 32) sts down left edge of face opening, making sure to work a YO at the end. PM to indicate beg of round. There should be 86 (90, 94) sts picked up, and 86 (90, 94) yarnovers, for a total of 172 (180, 188) sts.
Note: In the next round, the knit sts and picked up sts will be knit, while the yarnovers will be slipped. Ensure that the yarnovers before the markers stay to the right of each marker. Double-knit can look weird at first, but after working a few rounds, it will even out!
Round 1: [K1, sl1 pwise wyif] to end, slipping marker as you pass it.
Round 2: [Sl1 pwise wyib, p1] to end, slipping marker as you pass it.
Rounds 3-4: Repeat rounds 1-2 once more.
Round 5 (see tutorial below!): [K1, sl1 pwise wyif] to marker, SM, k1, sl1 pwise wyif, YO, slip next st onto cable needle pwise and hold in front, sl1 pwise wyif, slip st on cable needle back to LH needle and k2tog, sl1 pwise wyif, [k1, sl1 pwise wyif] to last 4 sts, sl1 pwise, slip next st pwise to cable needle and hold in back, slip st on RH needle back to LH needle and ssk, slip st on cable needle to RH needle wyif, YO, sl1 pwise wyif.
Round 6: Repeat round 2.
Rounds 7-10: Repeat rounds 1-2 twice more.
Next round: Slipping each st pwise, slip the knit sts onto the working needle and the purl sts onto a spare circular needle, held at the back, removing marker as you pass it (leave beginning of round marker in place). 86 (90, 94) sts on each needle
Break yarn, leaving a tail that is approximately 4 times the circumference of face opening. Thread tail onto a tapestry needle and graft front sts together with back sts.
